it’s become a personal mission to be able to cross all the smithsonians off my list of things done in dc. cause let’s be real…who knows how long i’m going to live here. God has a way of moving me around. i’m God’s marble in a game of chinese checkers. but anyway…yesterday i finished the national gallery of art and decided this was my favorite painting.
street in venice by john singer sargeant.
i don’t really like paintings that are perfectly detailed and lifelike. i like to see the painter in the painting. i like to put my nose an inch away from the canvas and look at the brushstrokes and stare at how the colors are layered and mixed together. i don’t know why really. but i think its fascinating. you can have a painting that is pristinely realistic and lifelike and it has no life. this girl. she has life. she’s an imperfect figure in an imperfect, blurry world but she has life. and that’s why i like her.
